Venous Insufficiency & Varicose Veins Q & A

What is venous insufficiency?

Your arteries carry blood from your heart to the different parts of your body, and your veins bring your blood back to your heart. The veins in your legs have to work against gravity to push your blood back up through your body. These veins have tiny valves that help your blood move efficiently and prevent it from flowing backward. When there is a problem with these valves, you have what’s called venous insufficiency. Venous insufficiency causes a variety of uncomfortable symptoms, including:

  • Swelling in your legs and ankles
  • Leg cramping
  • Aching, throbbing, or heaviness in your legs
  • Changes to your skin, including texture and color
  • Leg ulcers
  • Varicose veins

Venous insufficiency is caused by weakness in your valves, and it can be exacerbated by blood clots and varicose veins. Your risk of developing venous insufficiency increases if you smoke, have a family history of the disease, are overweight, or spend too much time standing.

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are the gnarled, blue or purple veins that can be found on your legs. They develop when a weak valve in one of the veins on your legs allows blood to flow backward, where it eventually pools and swells your vein.

Your chances of developing varicose veins are higher if you have a family history of varicose veins, are overweight, or if you smoke. Furthermore, you will have a higher chance of getting them the older you get.

Varicose veins are not a purely cosmetic concern. They can cause complications such as clots, bleeding, inflammation, and skin ulcerations.

How are venous insufficiency and varicose veins treated?

At Lakewood Cardiovascular Consultants, Dr. Calderon offers FDA-approved endovenous radiofrequency treatments that close and seal varicose veins. Not only does this get rid of your varicose veins, but it also eliminates future complications.

Endovenous radiofrequency treatments are outpatient procedures, so you can go home when your treatment is complete. You will need to wear compression stockings for one week after your procedure to help keep your vein closed and encourage healthy circulation.
